In my area, a wonderful establishment called Aladdin’s serves it alongside many of their signature dishes, illustrating its widespread popularity and versatility in authentic Middle Eastern cuisine.

For instance, they frequently use it to crown a succulent Chicken Shawarma Bowl, integrating it into a hearty Beef Kafta Bowl, or adding a fresh counterpoint to a rich Hummus Spiced Beef Plate. It’s also a fantastic addition to a warm pita bread, generously spread with hummus, layered with fresh tabbouleh, and grilled chicken. The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to incorporating this simple yet impactful salad into your culinary repertoire.

What I cherish most about this easy Lebanese salad recipe is its reliance on uncomplicated, wholesome ingredients. It masterfully combines the natural sweetness of tomatoes, the refreshing crunch of green bell peppers and cucumbers, the sharp zest of green onions and sweet onions, and the earthy freshness of parsley. The entire medley is then brought to life with a light, invigorating lemon dressing. This Lebanese Salad stands as a quintessential Middle Eastern classic, a staple in my kitchen alongside other beloved recipes like Fattoush Salad and Lebanese Tabbouleh Salad. These are the cherished salads that have graced my family table since I was a young girl, carrying generations of flavor and tradition.

Why You’ll Love This Authentic Lebanese Salata

There are countless reasons why this Lebanese Salata recipe deserves a permanent spot in your weekly meal rotation. Beyond its delightful taste, it offers a wealth of benefits that cater to both health-conscious individuals and those simply seeking flavorful, easy-to-prepare meals:

  • Unbeatable Freshness: Every ingredient in this salad screams freshness. From the crisp vegetables to the vibrant herbs, it’s a medley of textures and flavors that invigorates the senses. It’s truly a perfect way to enjoy seasonal produce.
  • Remarkably Healthy: Packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber from all the fresh vegetables, this salad is a powerhouse of nutrition. It’s naturally low in calories and fat (when prepared with the suggested light dressing), making it an ideal choice for anyone following a Mediterranean diet or simply aiming for a healthier lifestyle. It’s also naturally vegan and gluten-free, catering to a wide range of dietary needs.
  • Incredibly Versatile: As mentioned, this salad is far more than just a side. It can be a light lunch, a topping for various dishes, or even a foundation for a more substantial meal. Its adaptability means you’ll never get bored!
  • Authentic Middle Eastern Flavor: This recipe captures the essence of traditional Lebanese cuisine. The combination of specific fresh ingredients and the signature lemon-mint dressing creates an authentic taste that transports you straight to the heart of the Levant.
  • Effortlessly Easy to Make: With minimal cooking required and straightforward chopping, this salad comes together in just about 15 minutes. It’s perfect for busy weeknights, last-minute gatherings, or when you simply want a delicious, healthy meal without the fuss.

Of course, like many of my favorite simple salad recipes, this Lebanese Salata is highly customizable. You can truly make it your own by incorporating additional ingredients to suit your taste and dietary preferences. Feel free to add extra goodies like protein-rich beans, savory grilled meats, tangy feta cheese, or other fresh flavors that tantalize your palate. The beauty of a chopped salad lies in its flexibility.

The lemony-mint dressing is undeniably delicious and often worth making a double batch to drizzle over almost anything—from roasted vegetables to grilled fish. While it’s fantastic as is, I sometimes like to introduce a new layer of flavor by adding a teaspoon of earthy sumac or a pinch of fragrant za’atar. Both spices are incredibly popular in Middle Eastern cuisine and provide a wonderful aromatic depth. For an added textural crunch, I also love to toss in some crispy pita chips just before serving.

I find it incredibly convenient to prepare a large container of this fresh salad to keep in my fridge for easy lunches throughout the week. For optimal freshness and to prevent the vegetables from becoming soggy, I highly recommend waiting to add the salad dressing until you are just about ready to serve. This simple tip ensures that every bite remains crisp and bursting with flavor.

I am a true salad enthusiast and frequently rotate this recipe with other favorites such as a refreshing Kale Salad with Lemon Dressing and a hearty Mediterranean Bean Salad. Each offers a unique blend of flavors and textures, ensuring that healthy eating is always an exciting culinary adventure.

Essential Recipe Ingredients for Lebanese Salata

Close-up of fresh chopped vegetables for Easy Lebanese Salad, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and parsley.

Creating this authentic Lebanese Salata requires only a handful of simple, fresh pantry staples. The key to its incredible flavor lies in the quality and freshness of these core ingredients. See the recipe card below for exact measurements and printable instructions, but here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  • Tomatoes: Ripe, juicy tomatoes are essential. Roma tomatoes or vine-ripened varieties work beautifully, offering a sweet and slightly acidic base to the salad.
  • Green Bell Pepper: Provides a refreshing crunch and a subtly sweet, earthy flavor. Ensure it’s firm and vibrant green.
  • Cucumber: English cucumbers are ideal due to their thin skin and fewer seeds, offering a cool and crisp texture. Regular cucumbers can be used if peeled and deseeded.
  • Green Onions: Also known as scallions, these add a mild oniony bite and a hint of freshness, using both white and green parts.
  • Sweet Onion: A small amount of finely chopped sweet onion (like Vidalia) provides a deeper, savory onion flavor without being too overpowering.
  • Parsley: Fresh flat-leaf (Italian) parsley is crucial. It brings a bright, herbaceous note and is a cornerstone of Lebanese salads. Chop it finely for even distribution.
  • Lemon Sumac Dressing: This vibrant dressing is the soul of the salad. It’s a simple blend of good quality extra virgin olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice (key for that authentic tang), minced garlic for a pungent kick, dried mint for cooling freshness, and a touch of sumac for an additional zesty, slightly tangy note. Salt and pepper are added to taste.

Creative Ways to Customize This Easy Lebanese Salata

One of the many charms of Lebanese Salata is its incredible adaptability. While perfect in its classic form, it also serves as a fantastic canvas for culinary creativity. Don’t hesitate to experiment with these additions to tailor the salad to your preference or whatever you have on hand:

  • Add Protein for a Heartier Meal: Transform this side salad into a robust main dish by incorporating your favorite protein. Excellent choices include tender grilled chicken breast, succulent beef (such as shaved steak or crumbled Kafta), juicy grilled shrimp, crispy falafel, or flaky baked salmon. Hard-boiled eggs or canned tuna can also be quick, easy additions.
  • Boost with Beans: For added fiber, plant-based protein, and textural variety, beans are a wonderful complement. I particularly enjoy chickpeas (garbanzo beans), creamy cannellini (white) beans, or earthy black beans. Rinse and drain them well before adding.
  • Experiment with the Dressing: While the classic lemon-mint dressing is divine, you can switch it up. Consider adding a tablespoon of rich pomegranate molasses for a sweet-tart depth, a splash of balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar for a different kind of tang, or even a dollop of creamy Greek yogurt for a thicker, more luscious dressing. A dash of hot sauce can also introduce a spicy kick.
  • Introduce Cheese: If you’re a cheese lover, a sprinkle of cheese can elevate the flavor profile. Tangy feta cheese, crumbled into small pieces, works exceptionally well and is a common pairing in Mediterranean cuisine. Crumbled goat cheese could also offer a unique creaminess.
  • Vary the Vegetables: This salad is a celebration of fresh produce, so feel free to expand the vegetable medley. I love incorporating creamy avocado cubes, briny artichoke hearts, sweet roasted red peppers, thinly sliced red onion for a bolder flavor, halved cherry tomatoes, finely shredded carrots, crisp radish slices, crunchy celery, or even a touch of diced jalapeños for subtle heat.
  • Incorporate Grains: For a more substantial and satisfying salad, mix in some cooked grains. Fluffy quinoa, chewy bulgur wheat, light couscous, nutritious brown rice, or hearty farro are all excellent options that absorb the dressing beautifully and add complex carbohydrates.
  • Play with Fresh Herbs: Beyond parsley, fresh herbs can add incredible layers of aroma and flavor. Consider mixing in finely chopped fresh basil for a sweet, peppery note, dill for a slight anise-like freshness, additional fresh mint for an intensified cooling effect, or oregano for a classic Mediterranean touch.
  • Add Pickled Vegetables: For a delightful tangy contrast and extra crunch, I adore adding pickled vegetables to my salads. Homemade quick pickled red onions or a mix of quick pickled vegetables are fantastic choices that brighten up the entire dish.
  • Enhance Texture: Introduce different textures with toasted nuts (like pine nuts or walnuts), seeds (sunflower or pumpkin), or crunchy croutons for an extra dimension.

Step-by-Step: How to Prepare Your Easy Lebanese Salad

Crafting this refreshing Lebanese Salata is incredibly straightforward, requiring just a few simple steps. The key to a fantastic chopped salad is uniform dicing, ensuring that every bite delivers a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. Here’s how to bring this vibrant dish to life:

Step 1: Prepare and Mix Salad Ingredients: Begin by thoroughly washing all your fresh vegetables and herbs. On a clean cutting board, carefully dice the tomatoes, bell pepper, and cucumber into small, even pieces. Aim for uniform sizes for a visually appealing salad and consistent texture. Finely chop both the white and green parts of the green onions, and finely chop the small onion and fresh parsley. Transfer all these beautifully prepared ingredients into a large mixing bowl, making sure it’s spacious enough for easy tossing.

Step 2: Create the Zesty Lemon-Mint Dressing: In a clean mason jar or a small bowl, combine all the dressing ingredients: the high-quality extra virgin olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice (this fresh acidity is vital!), minced garlic cloves, fragrant dried mint, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. If using a mason jar, securely seal the lid and shake vigorously until all the ingredients are well combined and emulsified. If using a bowl, whisk continuously until the dressing is smooth and evenly blended. This simple, bright dressing is what truly brings the salad to life.

Step 3: Dress and Serve the Salad: Just before serving, pour the freshly prepared lemon-mint dressing over the chopped vegetables in the large bowl. Gently toss the salad to ensure every piece of vegetable is lightly coated with the flavorful dressing. Taste a small portion and adjust the seasonings as needed, adding more mint, salt, or pepper to your preference. For an optional extra layer of freshness and bulk, you can add chopped romaine lettuce to the bowl with the salad and toss to combine. Alternatively, create a beautiful presentation by laying a bed of crisp romaine lettuce in individual serving bowls and generously spooning the Lebanese Salad mixture on top.

Serve this delightful Lebanese Salata immediately as a refreshing side dish alongside grilled meats, falafel, or a rice pilaf. It also makes for a light and satisfying main course, especially when paired with grilled fish or pan-seared salmon, or tucked into a pita bread for a wholesome sandwich.

Expert Tips for Crafting the Perfect Lebanese Salad

Achieving a truly outstanding Lebanese Salata is easy, especially with a few insider tips:

  • Ingredient Quality is Key: Since this salad relies on raw vegetables, the fresher and higher quality your produce, the better the final taste. Seek out ripe, firm tomatoes, crisp bell peppers, and vibrant, fragrant parsley.
  • Uniform Chopping Matters: For a delightful texture in every bite and a beautiful presentation, aim to chop all your vegetables into roughly the same small dice. This ensures that no single ingredient overwhelms another and that the dressing coats everything evenly.
  • Dress Just Before Serving: This is perhaps the most crucial tip for any chopped salad. To prevent the vegetables from becoming soggy and to maintain their crispness, only add the dressing right before you plan to eat. If making ahead, store the dressing separately.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice is Non-Negotiable: Bottled lemon juice simply doesn’t compare to the bright, fresh zest of freshly squeezed lemons. It makes a significant difference in the dressing’s flavor.
  • Adjust Seasoning to Taste: Don’t be afraid to taste the salad after dressing and adjust the salt, pepper, or even add a bit more dried mint or a squeeze of lemon juice. Palates vary, and tailoring the seasoning to yours will make the salad perfect.
  • Chill for Enhanced Flavor: While you can serve it immediately, allowing the dressed salad to chill in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes can help the flavors meld together beautifully, making it even more refreshing.

Storage Tips for Leftovers and Meal Prep

Proper storage is essential to enjoy your Lebanese Salata for days to come. Store any leftover salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. As mentioned, if you anticipate having leftovers or are preparing this salad for meal prep, I highly recommend storing the dressing separately from the chopped vegetables. This ensures the vegetables remain crisp and fresh. When you’re ready to serve again, simply dress the portion you plan to eat. You might find that adding a little extra fresh dressing or a sprinkle of fresh herbs (like parsley or mint) can help revive the flavors and textures before serving.

Delicious Ways to Enjoy Your Lebanese Salata

The versatility of Lebanese Salata truly shines when it comes to serving. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy this incredible dish:

  • Classic Side Dish: It’s the perfect fresh and light accompaniment to almost any Middle Eastern meal, from grilled kebabs and shawarma to roasted chicken or lamb.
  • Healthy Main Course: Transform it into a fulfilling main by adding grilled protein (chicken, salmon, falafel), chickpeas, or grains like quinoa.
  • Mezze Platter Staple: Serve it as part of a traditional mezze spread alongside hummus, tabbouleh, baba ghanoush, olives, and warm pita bread.
  • Pita Pockets and Wraps: Spoon it into pita bread with hummus and grilled meat for a refreshing sandwich, or use it as a filling for wraps.
  • Grain Bowls: Create a vibrant and nutritious grain bowl by layering your favorite cooked grain (like bulgur or farro), a generous scoop of Lebanese Salata, and a protein source.
  • As a Topping: Use it to add a fresh, tangy crunch to various dishes, including tacos, scrambled eggs, or even avocado toast.

Prep: 15 minutes
Total: 15 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 medium tomatoes, diced {about 2 cups} – Choose ripe and firm tomatoes for the best flavor and texture.
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeds removed, chopped – Provides a refreshing crunch and subtle sweetness.
  • 1/2 English cucumber, seeds removed, chopped – English cucumbers are preferred for their thin skin and mild flavor.
  • 5 green onions, white and green parts chopped – Adds a fresh, mild onion flavor.
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped – Flat-leaf parsley is preferred for its robust flavor.
  • 1 small onion, chopped – A sweet onion like Vidalia works well here.
  • Romaine lettuce, chopped – Optional, for added volume and crunch.

For the dressing:

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil – Use a good quality olive oil for optimal flavor.
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is highly recommended.
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced – Adds a pungent depth to the dressing.
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint – Provides a signature cooling, aromatic flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon of your favorite spice {I like to use sumac or za’atar} – Optional, for an extra layer of authentic flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, {more to taste} – Enhances all the flavors.
  • Black pepper, to taste – Freshly ground black pepper is best.

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, chopped bell pepper, chopped cucumber, chopped green onions, finely minced parsley, and finely chopped sweet onion. Ensure all vegetables are well mixed.
  • To prepare the dressing, take a mason jar (or a small bowl). Add the extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, minced garlic cloves, dried mint, kosher salt, and black pepper. Securely seal the mason jar and shake vigorously until the dressing is thoroughly combined and emulsified. If using a bowl, whisk all ingredients together until smooth.
  • Just before serving, pour the prepared dressing over the chopped vegetables in the large bowl. Toss gently but thoroughly to ensure all the salad ingredients are evenly coated. Taste the salad and adjust the seasonings (mint, salt, pepper, or lemon juice) to your liking.
  • For an optional addition, you may add chopped romaine lettuce to the bowl with the dressed salad and toss lightly to combine. Alternatively, for a more elegant presentation, create a bed of chopped romaine lettuce in individual serving bowls and then spoon the Lebanese Salad mixture on top.
  • Serve your refreshing Easy Lebanese Salad immediately as a vibrant side dish to complement any meal, or elevate it to a main dish by adding grilled fish, chicken, or other proteins.

Notes

  • If you anticipate having leftovers or are preparing this salad for future meals, it’s best not to add the entire dressing to the salad at once. Instead, dress only the portion you plan to eat immediately. Store the remaining dressing separately and add it to the rest of the salad when you are ready to consume it. This method prevents the vegetables from becoming soggy and ensures a fresh, crisp texture with every serving.
  • While the basic lemon-mint dressing is wonderfully flavorful, feel free to enhance it with additional spices. A teaspoon of sumac can add a delightful tangy and slightly citrusy note, while za’atar (a blend of thyme, sesame seeds, and sumac) offers an earthy, herbaceous complexity that is truly authentic to Middle Eastern cuisine.
  • There are many ingredients you can add to customize this salad, transforming it to suit your taste or dietary needs. Consider additions such as crumbled feta cheese for a salty tang, briny olives, grilled meat (like chicken or beef) or plant-based protein like tofu or falafel, an array of additional fresh or roasted vegetables, and various beans for extra fiber and protein.
